May I Not Help You

Poor customer service reflects laziness and entitled shop owners.

I am SICK of poor customer service.

I’m sick of it! Sick of it! Sick of it!

I rarely shop at Walmart, but when I do there’s always a story to tell. I know, I know that you’re probably thinking Walmart and good customer service are antonyms SWEETHEART! They’re enemies; oil and water, humidity on natural hair. I know this, but still there are times when Walmart is there, like right there across from the beauty supply store. I’ll survey the parking lot and make the decision that would later confirm the initial decision on why I rarely frequent the massive establishment. Walmart is right in front of me, maybe just maybe it won’t be bad this time. How many of you have said that?

So far so good, I thought. I must get reacquainted with the layout. I see some improvements, but where is the… There I was looking for an item and hey wait, I noticed a Walmart employee. Like I visually see the employee and they see me, we see each other. They see that I’m searching for an item. I smiled at the employee and before I could say anything they walked right past me.

At that point I questioned my reality. Was that a mirage of an employee that worked at Walmart or was I deliberately ignored? The latter, the latter. What is so hard about asking the customer if they need help? This is not indicative of all Walmart employees, but a lot of them, a whole lot of them. It’s like they’re trained to ignore the customer.

Like most people I strongly desire good customer service. You would think that with places like Chick-fil-A, Publix, Trader Joes, and Quick Trip where customer service is usually ranked high, you would think that other companies would say to themselves, hummm maybe we should model what they’re doing, but they’re not. They are not even trying to step up to the plate to provide better service.

I said it before and I’ll say it again If you’re spending your money, then get the service you deserve. Do not accept less. Even the person that greets you at Walmart at times just looks tired. Come on now. I may be singling out Walmart, but there are so many companies, beauty supply owners, nail technicians, hair stylist, barbers, and colorist, shop owners, businesses that do not value their customers. The customer service that they’re providing is pitiful and disgraceful.

Many owners only care about the bottom line and that’s money. They don’t care how long they make you wait. They don’t care how far you drove. Your time means nothing to them, and they know it. Some businesses will not even clean their establishments, but they know you’ll be back because they do good work. We must demand better. They know that we’re vulnerable. They know that our nails and hair is a hot mess, but we will just have to wait.

I’m sick and tired of being treated poorly when I’m spending my money. With all this social media at my disposal I decided to turn things up. I’ve tweeted about lines that way too long, poor customer service, no speedbumps, being put on hold for too long. Please be sure to hashtag the business name if you want a response. The larger corporations will respond quick with apologies, coupons, etc. Put them on blast if they’re doing a poor job, make them do better. In addition, please put them on blast when they’re doing an amazing job.

I did a whole video on my struggling YouTube Channel (that you can subscribe to) about poor customer service focusing on nail and beauty salons. I think we need to put these businesses and owners on blast. They need to do better. They need to give us the paying customer an experience, not a nightmare. I have too many stories of poor customer service, but my nails looked good in the end. Unacceptable.

If you own a business, you need to treat it like a business. You need to appreciate your customers. If you work in customer service you need to smile and give good service, you never know who you’ll encounter and what opportunities could be given to you. If you speak a different language smile. A smile is universal, use it.
